Contest Final of Air Traffic Controllers’ Professional Skills

On 24-26 April 2007 the final contest of air traffic controllers’ professional skills was held at St.Petersburg State University of Civil Aviation. 35 participants from Russia who won in regional contests displayed their knowledge and skills.

On 24-26 April 2007 the final contest of air traffic controllers’ professional skills was held at St.Petersburg State University of Civil Aviation. 35 participants from Russia who won in regional contests displayed their knowledge and skills.

The contest consisted of theoretical and practical stages. During the theoretical stage every participant answered several questions related to the history of aviation.

On 25 April during the practical stage every air traffic controller was supposed to pull duty during a 20-minute period and manage contingencies, thus proving their professionalism.

The last stage of the contest comprised a theoretical part and was assessed on the basis of seven disciplines: aviation meteorology, radio phraseology, ensuring of flight safety, ATC working techniques, regulatory documentation, radio technical support as well as the English language. Sergey V. Shabalin, Branch “Far East Air Navigation” was nominated the best air traffic controller of the country. He was awarded the first prize and a diploma. 

Sergey A. Chizhov, Branch “Ural Air Navigation” took the second place and Alexander V. Onishenko, Branch “Northern Ural Air Navigation” was the third. Persistence and purposefulness of the contest finalists were seen the true value not only by the organizers of the Contest but also by the partners of the State ATM Corporation, including the ATC trade union, airlines, radar equipment manufacturers.
