QNH Implementation at Anapa (Vityazevo) Aerodrome

As of 00:00 UTC on 21 May 2020, Taman ATS centre of State ATM Corporation’s South Air Navigation branch has successfully adopted QNH and altitudes expressed in feet for Anapa (Vityazevo) terminal area operations. Flight SDM6201 from Saint Petersburg to Anapa, which landed at the airport at 08:39 UTC, was the first flight to benefit from the change.

All the administrative and technical arrangements to enable the switch to QNH and altitudes expressed in feet as per the schedule endorsed on 6 February 2018 by the Head of the Federal Air Transport Agency Southern Territorial Administration and approved by State ATM Corporation leadership have been completed. The preparations for the transition included ATC and CNS staff training, a safety assessment at the QNH implementation stage, and upgrades to specialised software for Alpha-3 ATC automation system, GRANIT recorder, Expert ATC simulator, LCCS-A-2000 GBAS system, and ATIS. Taman ATS centre staff have ensured a smooth transition to QNH within the required time frame. The implementation efforts were led and controlled by specialists from State ATM Corporation’s South Air Navigation branch and Head Office.

The implementation of QNH harmonises Russian air traffic control rules with ICAO regulations and significantly enhances safety. QNH has already been adopted by Saint Petersburg (Pulkovo airport), Yugra (Khanty-Mansiysk airport), Bashkortostan (Ufa airport), and Saratov (Gagarin airport) ATS centres. QNH and feet are also used to provide air traffic services at Simferopol ACC. Murmansk, Krasnoyarsk, Arkhangelsk, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, and Syktyvkar are planned to follow suit with QNH implementation soon. It is emblematic that the first flight after the adoption of QNH arrived at Vityazevo airport from Saint Petersburg, Russia’s first airport to implement the standard as a pilot project.
