State ATM Corporation participates in VOLKAM/16

Last week, “Kamchatka Air Navigation” Branch of State ATM Corporation conducted VOLKAM/16 international remote volcanic ash exercises for the Far Eastern part of ICAO European Region.

Representatives of volcano observatories, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, Anchorage, Fukuoka, Khabarovsk and Magadan ACCs, meteorological authorities, Russian, the US and Japanese airlines, international organizations participated in the teleconference.

VOLKAM/16 simulated a volcanic eruption of Karpinsky on Paramushir Island (the northern portion of Kurile Islands) with ash clouds impacting Trans-Eastern and Northern Pacific routes.

Coordination procedures between all participating parties, tactical re-routes, transmission of air-reports on volcanic ash were successfully demonstrated during the exercises.
