Domestic Traffic in Russian Airspace Up by 15.6% in 2019
2019 has seen continued growth in air traffic volume.
Over the 12 months of the previous year, the number of flights in the upper airspace of the Russian Federation hit a record of 1.83 million. The previous maximum, 1.68 million flights, had been reached at year-end 2018. The growth in air traffic in 2019 against 2018 totalled 8.6%.
From January to December 2019, the number of flights operated via domestic airways increased by 15.6%. Russian air traffic controllers handled 939.2 thousand flights. This is more than half of all flight operations handled during 2019 in the country’s upper airspace. A total of 887.6 thousand flights were operated via international air routes by Russian and foreign air carriers, including 306.6 thousand overflights.
In December 2019, airspace users operated 139 thousand flights (+7.2%), out of which 68.8 thousand were international (+2.5%), including 26.6 thousand overflights (+4.1%). 70.2 thousand (+12%) flights were operated via domestic air routes.
